This session will be facilitated by Chris Atherton, Head of Reviews and Principal Social Worker at Haringey Adult Services.

The recent report for the London Safeguarding Boards, “Learning from Safeguarding Adults Reviews”, highlighted the most common learning theme coming from SARs was that mental capacity assessments were missing or poorly performed. This fundamental element within the process, if not done correctly, can place service users and organisations at significant risk. However, many practitioners can find the assessment of capacity a complex issue, especially when linked to adult safeguarding.

This half-day session will explore:

  • The findings of the learning from SARs report
  • The fundamentals of the Mental Capacity Act
  • Safeguarding processes and the question of capacity
  • Working within complexity

This session is open to Social Workers and staff working in Social Care across the Teaching Partnership (Barnet, Enfield, Hackney, and Haringey Councils, and Norwood)
